My only reservation is that while the first half of the book really gripped me, the pacing fell off in the latter half for a while. There is brutality and this is not for the faint of heart, but there is a pleasing resolution. It seemed like all three races lived in this world and we get to know them separately but I never felt like they had any encounters before this story.

It had incredible world building and complex characters. The world is vivid, the writing thoroughly captivating and it never lets up. Yhalen is a young man with special power: The concept is brilliant giving us another take on racial strifeand the world building is rich and colorful with well-drawn secondary characters. Bloodraven, being a mongrel amongst full-blooded ogres, has learnt it the hard way. For a big chunk of the book I was simply hooked and dying to find out how the intense dynamics between Bloodraven and Yhalen would play out. I’m putting this under the tag ‘lgbt’ rather than ‘lgbt-romance’ as is my standard tag because I refuse to call this book a romance or consider it as having romantic themes.
No details were ever left out. This isn’t an insta love story but a story about two people who find they have much more in common than they realize and find a connection with each even if they can’t explain or define it.
Goodread friend Yhalen is of the Ydregi, a Fey-like people who dwell in the forest and live in the ways of the Goddess, in harmony with nature and subtle magic. This is such an amazing read. For me, the portrayal is the problem.

Sure, it was disgusting, scary and p.l.nubn sometimes but it was also nice, exciting and a wonderful adventure to follow. Like many have said, this book isn’t for the faint-hearted. There’s a lot of missed potential here because Yahlen’s character could go a lot of ways and have his own fascinating journey.
Bloodraven soon discovers that his human is a great deal of trouble and is revealed to be much more than he seems. This book slowly unfolds the tenuous relationship of these two MCs and it is fraught with tension, fear, lust, and want – with dashes of tenderness and comfort thrown in.
